The den or shed was initially built on stilts, these were however discarded when we arrived on site. The building incorporates a cast iron circular window salvaged from the main house. The doors comprise a front sliding door with an end opening leaf - both meeting at a corner, or both open to let in more garden . The roof is a composite structure of plywood laminated into an inverted barrel vault to make rainwater run off and also retain a minimal thickness. The integrity of the roof and the stiffness of the corner was created using a 50 x 75 steel angle welded to fit. The power supply and wiring was run within the wall thickness wherever possible. (all walls, floor and roof being insulated with 50mm closed cell insulation.) The building was flat packed and delivered on site in five pieces plus steel and joinery. The external decking was cut to fit the retaining walls and water from the roof was ducted away in purpose made stainless steel piping.
This garden won a 'Silver Gilt' from the 'Evening Standard' September 2005. |
