Ogee Tower Pergola

This pergola was designed to separate two parts of a sloping garden and to provide a walkway to link various elements within the garden. It is made from Opepe, a material more commonly found on dock gates and marine piles. The degree of 'finish' to the garden needed to be echoed in the pergola and it was felt that a fresh sawn oak one that would develop deep and attractive fissures would not fulfil this part of the brief. The opepe will dry and crack with fairly fine surface crazing.

The width of the pergola was defined by the elevated walkway it stood on. To overcome the linear feel and introduce some sense of greater size to the three towers two conceits were employed. Firstly the posts holding the towers were made of 6" square material as opposed to 5" for the remaining legs and secondly the roof landed on a moulded plate that was located on the outside face of the legs. This gave teh feel of the tower squares being bigger than the straight areas - when in fact they were exactly the same size.
